A grand celebration of Youth Mela’17 was hosted for the youth of Tiruchy Province at Pastor Lenssen Polytechnic College, Kuthenkuzhi on 28, 29 January, 2017. 300 youth from Salesian presences of Southern Tamilnadu gathered to celebrate their youthfulness and friendship. The theme of the celebration was “Youth and Entrepreneurship”. As the celebration kick started, the youth first gathered around Fr. Provincial - Fr. Albert Johnson, to thank him for his wonderful service to the young as Provincial for the past six years. An emotion of love and gratitude for making the life of the rural youth brighter and meaningful in his tenure as Provincial. A systematic method of formation and animation of the young was actually developed in the Province under his guidance and is in practice till date. This method is well appreciated and much wanted at the national level. Fr. Provincial in his opening address encouraged the young to appreciate Tamil culture and become agents of social transformation referring to the recent protest organized by youth at Marina and other parts of Tamilnadu demanding ban on Jallikattu. He then celebrated the Holy Eucharist with the youth and put the celebration on right tone. A picnic is more than eating a meal; it is a pleasurable state of mind. So to add taste to the celebration, the youth took a trip to Kanyakumari for half a day outing. Yelling and cheering in the bus; meals under banyan tree; Boating to Vivekanandar rock and walk around the touring spot till sunset kept and the youth together and brought a love of friendship among them. In return to the Mela site, the togetherness continued around the camp fire. Each group performed colourful programmes and kept the night illuminating with joy and happiness. The second day of the celebration focused on the animation of the young on the theme, “Youth and Entrepreneurship”. The young entrepreneurs from the Salesian presences were identified and were awarded the honour of “Young Entrepreneur Award – 2017”. Seven youth received the award from Fr. Doss Kennedy, Vice Provincial. These seven young entrepreneurs shared their experiences and motivated the gathering which was divided into three groups. As a culmination of the celebration, two charismatic Entrepreneurs and a Bank Manager were invited and a panel discussion was conducted to motivate the young to develop entrepreneurial skills. Fr. Casimirraj coordinated the panel discussion and helped the gathering to gain inspirations and knowledge on entrepreneurship. The entire celebration of the Mela’17 was colourful and meaningful because of the planning and execution by the Province level office bearers of ILAMAI in collaboration with the leaders of individual youth group. The Salesians stood at their back and pushed them to front with their continual support encouragement. Kudos dear young leaders.
